The Mikado is one of Gilbert & Sullivan’s most well-known works, satirising Victorian Britain’s politics and aristocracy, cleverly disguised by its setting in exotic Japan. It is a tangled web of intrigue, false identities, thwarted love and marriage, with the ever-present threat of execution hanging over all those involved. The result is a complex parody with memorable tunes, witty dialogue and colourful costumes.
